Medium format stereo photography has attracted a devoted following of practitioners captivated by the enhanced detail and immersive quality of the 3D images. New York Stereoscopic Society member Tom Deering will share his experience addressing the challenges of medium format (MF) stereo. Tom gives sources for cameras, viewers, processing and mounting supplies, with cost comparisons to more common stereo formats. He will also give a number of online resources for information and equipment. Tom will demonstrate in viewers and in projection the bright crisp images obtainable in medium format, even with inexpensive off-the-shelf cameras. The presentation will cover the advantages and limitations of single-camera stereo.

Since no medium format stereo projectors have ever been manufactured, this evening's presentation is a rare treat. Using a pair of standard MF projectors, Tom will project medium format stereo images from several New York Stereo Society members, as well as a collection of his own work from recent travels in the Czech Republic.

Experimenter and inventor Tom Deering has been an amateur photographer for almost twenty years. In addition to taking stereo photographs, Tom enjoys building his own stereo cameras. He took his first stereo photos with a camera he devised, and has created several cameras since then. Tom is a computer consultant in Manhattan. He and his wife Pat share a cozy apartment and aviary near Central Park.

The evening meeting will include some announcements, and our usual informal show-and-tell when members share their own work (in any format) in viewers or on bulletin boards around the room.

Free and open to the public.
