Seneca Ray Stoddard – Adirondack Photographer and Conservationist

NYSS member Stuart Stiles worked with author and collector Guenther Bauer to create a slide show on the work of this important Victorian-era photographer (and a pioneer in eco-tourism). Seneca Ray Stoddard brought a light touch to his views of 19th century vacationers in a vast wild region made newly accessible by rail and a post-war economic boom. Stoddard’s stereoviews and magic lantern shows helped convince the New York State Assembly to create the Adirondack Park in 1892.
Stiles was inspired by Bauer’s 1996 article in Stereo World. Working from the author’s extensive collection of Stoddard views, he undertook the digital restoration and mounting required for a slide show. Several unretouched prints will be exhibited to demonstrate the image editing work. Stiles Studio produces Modern Magic Lantern Theater shown the Museum Packet series of historic stereoscopic collections, and the Book Viewer for stereo print pairs. Stuart and his son Greg have delighted audiences at historical societies, museums, colleges and the National Stereoscopic Association with their shows and publications.
The meeting will include some announcements, and an informal time after the presentation when members show and discuss their own work (in any format) in viewers or on bulletin boards.
