Exposing the Deep:Technology and the Art of Underwater Photography

Thursday, May 29, 7:00 PM
Spring 2003

Banded Coral Shrimp, Bonaire, 1996

Stereoscopic 3D photographer Ed Jameson will show images created on his dives in the vicinity of Bonaire and Curaçao, where he has become familiar with many individual animals in the coral reef environment. His work is presented in daily shows at the 3D Theater of the Curaçao Sea Aquarium in Netherlands Antilles. Jameson will contribute his three-dimensional perspective to a program that also features the renowned photographer, writer and cinematographer Norbert Wu (www.norbertwu.com) showing his recent work.

These exceptional underwater photographers will discuss the unique technological challenges inherent to their media. Jameson will project polarized 3D stills and Wu will project digital video sequences (non-stereoscopic). The evening will be hosted by ichthyologist Dr. Melanie Stiassny, Axelrod Research Curator at AMNH.

Presented in collaboration with the Art/Science Collision program series, this unique gathering of underwater photography talent commemorates the opening of the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History. The Hall opens to the public on May 17, 2003 after a two-year renovation.

Tickets $15, AMHH members $13.50
