National Stereoscopic Association Convention Wrapup

Report and photos from Sheldon Aronowitz:

The 2009 NSA Convention was held July 9-13 in Mesa, Arizona. Attendees from New York included Carol Super Gold, Ronald Gold, Mark Golebiowski and myself. This is the 36th consecutive NSA convention, and the second time in Mesa - the first being in June of 2000. The conventions just keep getting better and better - this one being no exception. There were about seventy 3D still and video presentations, from Thursday to Sunday - ALL projected digitally - a first! Some of the presentations were professional or semi-professional - but all looked to be professionally done - due to Stereo Photo Maker and Pro-Show software. Many of the shows used panning and zooming effects with the stills as well as video within the stills. There was much more 3D video in the theatre this year (thanks, in part, to StereoDataMaker), including "Mermaid Parade" by NYSS members Bill Meredith and Jamie Smith, which was very well received by the audience. The workshops included tutorials in Stereo Photo Maker, Pro Show Gold/Producer, My Album, SDM, Phantograms, etc. as well as Sue Barry's lecture and book signing of "Fixing My Gaze". Special interest group meetings included the Friends of the 3D Center, View Master Collectors, Vintage Stereo Slide Group, Stereoscopic Society of America, Medium Format, and others.

Guest of honor at the banquet was Charlie Van Pelt who gave a superb talk and and 3D slide show of his 60 years as a View-Master photographer. Following Saturday night's banquet, the "Dive in Theatre" in the hotel pool was enjoyed by all. The usual room hopping, excursions, etc, rounded out the program. The temperature was into the 115 degree area - but still more comfortable than 85 and humid in New York City!

Fuji digital stereo camera and viewer

New products included a 3D digital camera by Fuji featuring a 3D screen in the camera and add on large 3D screen to watch your 3D stills and 3D video - to be released within a few weeks. Another product was a viewer which can hold 200,000 3D stills! The viewer will be ready for purchase in a month or so. It has a navigation system and focus and fills a much needed gap. (When filled with 200,000 images, though, it will surely be very heavy!!! :-)

The Art Gallery was like a 3D museum within the convention and displayed some fantastic work by NSA members. The convention registration packet included a specially produced View Master reel of Mesa Arizona by Rich Dubnow - who will be providing a service no longer available from Mattell/Fisher Price View Master. He will offer mass production of View Master reels in any quantity. Next year the convention will be held in Huron, Ohio - drivable from New York City - so let's plan a lot more participation from New York Stereoscopic Society members.
